The British Passport Renewal Process

Length of stay permitted

When applying for a passport (renewal, or lost/stolen) you will need to fill in an ‘Applying for a passport from outside the UK - payment instruction form’. This is essential to the application and you’ll need a valid credit or debit card (Mastercard, Visa, Electron, Diners Club and JCB are accepted) to complete the process.

As you may be aware there are numerous types of different passports that the British government provides, so first you need to understand which you need and then you will need to follow the link below and follow the steps to find the correct form and information on what supporting documents you will need to provide.

Please note that it is vital you follow the rules and requirements for each passport application form and provide all the requested supporting documents, as this is by far the most common reason that applications are rejected. A very common issue is with passport photos, so please follow the rules to passport photos carefully.

Different cases

Lost or stolen passports: If your passport is either lost or stolen you must report it to the police in the country where it was lost immediately. It is essential that you take the police report to the interview when you apply for a renewal or emergency travel document. When you fill out the online form you will be directed to the LSO1 form, which will need to be printed out and added to supporting documents.

Renewal passports: To qualify for passport renewal, you will need to still have your passport and it must still be undamaged.

Where to begin your passport application in all cases

In most countries you are now able to apply online and mail the form separately. However, if your country is not within the service of the online process you can follow the clear steps in the online form and apply in person at the nearest British embassy, consulate or high commission.

All passport applications (lost/stolen, renewal for any passport type) can be done

Please note: To complete either of the processes you will need a printer.
